I am sure that most, if not all, of us became familiar with sports coaches from the likes of Little League all the way through college and beyond. Many still follow full time sports teams and are well familiar with their coaches. However, if you own or manage any sort of business enterprise; you may wonder what relevance coaching has for you?

What Is A Coach

In the context of this article; we are obviously talking about human coaches and not motorized ones. Having said that; is a coach merely a teacher, an instructor; or, something else that is more unique? Teachers may teach classes of many people at once but, their main aim is to install knowledge into the individuals. Likewise, an instructor is more interested in the individual’s response to the instruction. Coaches do conduct both teaching and instruction; but; in most cases, their aim is to bring forward results for a team.

This is where the relevance of coaching enters the world of business and commerce. From small businesses to large conglomerates; businesses consist of more than one person and, for these businesses to prosper; it is important that everyone (from the boss down) knows how to carry out their specific functions in coordination with all others in the company. I.E. at work; they must function as a team. Team building is important and this requires coaching.

The Sales Function

You can call it by many names but the root of sales is to get orders for the products, services or ideas produced or made available from the company. A salesperson might be judged successful through winning more orders than anyone else in the same organization; but, this would not be good if the company cannot produce the items in sufficient quantity or type to fill those orders. In such a case, that salesperson could be just as much a weak link in the team as colleagues who are under achieving.

In both cases, those involved could benefit from sales coaching in Chicago or elsewhere. The first example needs to become part of the team that includes all other departments within the company; while the second might benefit from some individual motivational coaching. Sales coaching should not be restricted to the sales and marketing department; it should cover all those who interact with that department.
