Every paycheck you receive has had taxes taken out of it. The taxes you pay are used to pay for essential government services, including the provision of Social Security disability benefits.

If you should suffer from a long-term or permanent physical or mental disability and you can no longer work, you can file a claim for disability benefits with the SSA in Missouri. If your claim is approved, you will receive monthly payments. Millions of Americans apply for disability benefits every year, assuming that they will begin receiving benefits within a matter of months. It makes sense that claimants would think this; after all, they paid into the program. Unfortunately, for most, this does not happen. An overwhelming majority of claims are denied.
If your claim was amongst those that were denied, there is still hope. There is an appeal process available to those who had their initial claim denied.

Appeal the Denial

Once a claimant is notified that the claim was denied, one of two things usually happens, both of which are mistakes. The first mistake is to give up all hope and abandon their claim. The second mistake is to start all over again and re-apply.

If your claim was not approved, do not give up. A scant 30 percent of claims are approved at the initial stage. Of those that do go through with the appeals process, about half result in approval of their claim.

Re-applying is also not a good idea. Although the appeals process is lengthy, if you decide to re-apply rather than appeal, chances are your claim will be denied again. Eventually, if you are not one of the 30 percent you will have to appeal.

If you have been denied, it is always a good idea to speak to a knowledgeable Social Security disability lawyer before filing your appeal.
