If you have a manufacturing business or own a warehouse, a forklift is a piece of equipment that is essential to your business. The motor powered industrial fork truck has multiple functions and is used to transport and stack inventory, supplies and cargo. In some cases businesses need such cargo lifters only for short durations of time. When you are engaged in a contract job that only requires the need for such equipment for a limited period of time, the best way to meet with the requirement is to rent a forklift or to buy a used forklift that is in good working condition. Buying a new piece of equipment is not cost effective in such cases.

There are a wide variety of machines for consideration. Depending on the function you are seeking you can hire or buy different types of trucks. A machine is used for transferring heavy loads on two forks or blades. The blades can be maneuvered up and down, forward and backward to lift and place or stack heavy loads or pallets. Distance between the blades can be adjusted and some attachments can be added or replaced to the existing machinery. By manipulating the system, you can change the capacity, carriage type and other hydraulic functions of your truck.

The types of forklift that are in common use are:

  • Standard trucks: used for lifting weights of 3,000 to 4,000 pounds to a height of 20 feet.

  • Reach trucks: run on electricity, narrow aisle trucks, designed for stacking cargo and can raise cargo to a height of 40 feet.

  • Order selector: very narrow aisle trucks that can lift both the operator and the cargo.

  • Swing mast trucks: similar to standard trucks but their masts can be made to swing in one direction to the extent of 90 degrees.

  • Motorized pallet trucks: also called walkies, riders and walkie riders they don’t need an operator to run it.

  • Turret trucks: can lift both operator and cargo and can additionally swing the forks 90 degrees on either side, making them agile and ideal for perfect stacking.
