When you look at a typical roof from street level it doesn’t look all that complicated. This is far from the truth, there are a number of areas on a roof that are problematic and will often require repair. There are some problems which are not all that difficult but most homeowners are reluctant to work at height and the will always turn to a contractor that does roof repairs in Orange Park FL.

Fascia:

When you look at a roof you will see a vertical band, usually made from wood that runs around the perimeter of the house just under the edge of the visible roof. The whole idea of the fascia is to cover the ends of the structural members that go to make up the roof, keeping water out. The fascia is also where the gutters attach so it is easily subjected to excessive water; it is this that is the number one reason why a fascia will fail. If you look and see signs of rot or deterioration then it will have to be repaired if possible otherwise it will require replacing. These problems, if left unattended can be the cause of significant damage so do not let it go.

Soffit:

Just as the fascia covers the ends of the rafters the soffit covers them in the other direction. The soffit covers the exposed surface running beneath the overhang of the roof. The soffit is where the attic vents are located, these vents are important as they allow for ventilation of the attic and importantly, they stop the formation of condensation which can result in rot setting into the rafters and beams. Look for signs of rot or unwanted holes; this can become the access point for insects and vermin wishing to enter the attic space.

Gutters:

The gutter system is extremely important, without gutters there is no way to keep water away from the foundation and basement walls. Water running down the exterior face of the basement walls can result in a destruction of the structural integrity of the foundation and of course leak into the basement. The problem with gutters is clogging; this is always the result of blowing leaves and other flying litter and debris. Once the gutter develops a blockage caused by a clog, the water will naturally overflow and affect the foundations; not only that, water can back up under the shingles and enter the house. Small holes in the gutter material can be repaired with caulk but the better solution is to avoid the problem in the first place by installing gutter guards, keeping the gutters free from debris that is the cause of overflow and rust. If you see that the gutters on your home are in a bad state of repair or sagging you need to contact a contractor that does roof repairs in Orange Park FL.
