Struggling with how often you need to put out dog food in your Gainesville home? How many times per day does a dog really need to eat? We humans, are used to eating three meals per day, but does a dog need the same frequency? Do they need less or more? Should you use organic dog food or is a conventional food better?

Consider Free Feeding

One option that some pet owners adopt is called free feeding. Essentially, they fill up a large container once per day and let their dogs eat as they will. This can be a good option for dogs that aren’t heavy eaters, and who will only eat until they’re full, and then go nap or play for a bit. However, there are many breeds that are not ideally suited to free feeding. If your dog is young, constantly eats and then looks for more, or returns constantly to the food bowl out of boredom, then free feeding is probably not the best idea.

Twice per Day

For most dogs, twice daily feedings are more than ample. Feed them once in the morning, and then again in the evening. Of course, you’ll need to consult your vet on the right amount of food per serving, as this will vary by breed, but also by activity level, by age, and other considerations. If you’re not careful, even twice daily feedings could be too much, and your dog could begin to put on weight that causes health problems.

The Right Food Is as Important as Frequency

While figuring out how often to feed your dog can be a challenge, understand that finding the right food is just as important. If you’re like many pet owners, you care about your dog, but you don’t have the fortune to spend on food. This can make you gravitate towards bulk dry foods, particularly store brands. This should really be avoided. You can find high-quality, organic dog food options out there that offer all the nutrition needed, and won’t break the bank.

Many bulk dog foods, particularly store brands, are made with meat by products, contain grains, and can ultimately damage your dog’s health over time. A good, organic dog food will deliver the right nutrition and will include only wholesome ingredients. You can even find grain-free options if your dog is sensitive.
