Fixing an old deck may require minimal or extensive repairs or renovations. Below is a short general guide on fixing up an old deck that has been worn out by the elements over time.
Step 1. Perform Any Needed Deck Repairs
Start with an inspection with the deck. Focus attention on any portion of the deck that contacts the ground directly. This can include the stair stringers, posts, or joists that are located at ground level. You can use a screwdriver to check for any structural damage. From this information, you may need to replace floor boards or railings as needed.
Step 2. Sand the Deck (if needed)
If the wood boards are uneven with little to no finish left, then you may want to sand the surfaces with a sander. Only perform this step if your deck truly needs it prior to cleaning.
Step 3. Clean the Deck Surface
Many decks can be revived from an old condition with a deck cleaner. Many deck cleaning products require the use of a stiff bristle brush and some arm strength to push the cleaning mixture into the wood. Always wear gloves and eye protection when working with concentrated cleaning chemicals. With a stiff bristle brush, work the cleaner into the fibers of the wood and then rinse the wood boards. Keep the boards damp to help the cleaning solution work effectively. Wait for the deck to dry prior to staining.
Be sure to protect nearby plants from the any chemical cleaner spilling from the deck. You can also use a pressure washer to attack tough deck stains, including scrub resistant-stains. Pressure washing can also be used to remove wood fibers that have been damaged by the sun.
Step 4: Apply the Stain
After making all necessary deck repairs, sanding (if necessary), and cleaning, apply a protective stain finish. For older decks, a semi-transparent stain may be best. For new wood decks, you can use a clear finish or transparent stain.
