Gum disease is one of the most common health problems in the country, affecting many adults. The first sign that someone would notice is usually a small amount of bleeding when brushing the teeth. Untreated, this can ultimately result in lost teeth.
Gingivitis – Stage 1 Gum Disease
Gingivitis refers to the first stage of periodontitis (gum disease). It is caused by the bacteria in plaque, a substance that collects in the spaces around the teeth. Gums become infected by the bacteria, appear red and swollen and bleed easily. If the plaque is not removed by brushing or dental cleaning, the problem will worsen and spread.
While regular brushing and flossing will remove much of the plaque, it will not remove it all. Dental cleaning is able to remove the plaque that cannot be reached otherwise. At this stage, the condition is reversible. None of the tissue or bone that holds teeth in place has been lost.
Periodontitis – Stage 2 Gum Disease
Untreated, gingivitis progresses and becomes known as periodontitis. By this time, the bacteria-containing plaque and subsequent infection has become much more serious. As the gums have pulled away from the teeth, pockets have been created. These pockets provide the perfect bacteria breeding spots, allowing plaque to spread below the gum line. Toxins are created by the bacteria which begin to break down the structure (bone and connective tissue) that holds the teeth in their proper places.
At this point, there can be irreversible damage done. Teeth will have become lost or so loose that they must be removed.
Periodontitis is Linked to Other Health Issues
As serious as tooth loss is, researchers have linked periodontitis to several serious health problems. The inflammation caused by the bacterial toxins must be treated. Any long-lasting infection is serious. Visit the site for more info.
Diabetics are more prone to periodontal disease than others. This is probably because their immune system is compromised by the diabetes. Periodontal disease can become severe enough to increase blood sugar, making it more difficult to manage the diabetes.
Periodontal disease has been shown to increase the risk of developing heart disease. It also puts someone at an increased risk of having a stroke.
