Roof mastic is used to seal a roof against the ingress of water and is often used for roof repair in Edmond. There are a number of different types of products which are called “mastic” but in general, roof mastic is a sticky material which, once applied, dries to a rubber like surface which retains flexibility. Roof mastic is available from any hardware store or DIY shop and is always carried by roofers who are called upon to make roof repairs in Edmond.
A common type of roof mastic is that which can be used anywhere on the roof where there is a possibility of water infiltration. These areas can be seams in the roof, the corners, along the edges of flashing and over nail heads that may have risen from the shingled surface. The material comes packaged in buckets or cans and is applied with an old putty knife. For small areas or areas that are difficult to reach, the same material is available in tubes which allow application with a caulking gun. Once a roof has been repaired or sealed with mastic it is a good idea to look at the areas periodically to ensure that the mastic has not pulled off the surface or cracked.
Another type of mastic is sealant; this material is designed to be applied over the entire surface of the roof. This material is often applied as a method to extend the life of the roof surface by giving it additional waterproofing. This material is not as thick and is applied with a roller, wide paint brush or spray. When the task is completed, the sealant forms a membrane over the entire roof; it stays elastic and does not crack over time or weather conditions. If the roof is in a bad state of repair, this coating will be of no value and the roof will have to be replaced rather than repaired.
Regardless of the mastic which is used, it stays flexible over a long period of time. It expands and contracts depending on the weather and continues to keep water out as long as it is not cracked or chipped which can happen if it is walked on excessively. Once the mastic has been applied, it can be painted to coordinate with the roof color.
