You’ve probably heard of dip and chew, but have you heard of snus? A surprisingly high number of people haven’t, although snus tobacco is gradually becoming more popular. As with any tobacco product, however, it has its controversies. Some people claim it is just as dangerous as traditional cigarette smoking. However, increased research may show that snus tobacco is slightly safer. Continue reading to find out more about snus tobacco, and why many people prefer it over smoking.

An Introduction to Snus

Snus tobacco first appeared in Sweden in the early 18th century, where it quickly rose in popularity. Snus originates from snuff, which is smokeless tobacco inhaled through the nose. Unlike snuff, snus is moist and it is not inhaled. Instead, it is placed under the upper lip, where it releases a flavorful burst of nicotine.

There are a few variations of snus. Scandinavian snus is mild, and contains fruit or floral flavoring. American snus, which is less moist, tends to contain stronger flavoring (often mint or fruit). Makla, which is found in Belgium and Africa, is similar to Scandinavian snus. Naswar, which is found in Central Asia, is usually placed under the tongue. It contains oils and wood ash.

Why People Prefer Snus

Snus tobacco is gaining popularity because it is a convenient way to get nicotine without having to smoke. Many people agree—it is less of a hassle to slip a bit of snus under your lip than it is to drag on a cigarette. Additionally, “no smoking” rules do not apply to snus use.

Another reason snus is popular is because of how discreet it is. For instance, when you smoke a cigarette, the accompanying smoke is unpleasant and obvious to those around you. However, snus, when placed under the lip, does not release any odor whatsoever. Therefore, it can be enjoyed anytime. No one around you has to know you have it!

Health Effects

By now, you have probably heard of the dangers of cigarette smoke. Research has proven that people who are exposed to second-hand smoke may suffer the same adverse health effects as those who smoke regularly. Smokeless tobacco, such as snus, eliminates the need to worry about any exposure to smoke. Snus users also have no need to worry about lung cancer, as snus is not inhaled.

The tobacco in snus is pasteurized. This process kills off tobacco-specific nitrosamines, also known as TSNAs. TSNAs are known carcinogens, and are linked to all kinds of tobacco-related cancers. This means that the nicotine in snus is “cleaner” and contains less harmful chemicals. Though snus is not without its risks, many health experts now agree that snus may indeed be less harmful for the body than traditional tobacco products.
