For assistance in controlling the swelling and pain associated with lymphedema, specially designed garments are available for different body parts. Lymphedema compression garments must be carefully selected and properly fitted to ensure maximum effectiveness.

Typically lymphedema compression garments are not worn until Phase II of treatment with complete decongestive therapy (CDT) and then only during the day. They are often designed to be very subtle in coloring and style, limiting the visibility of the garment. They can be worn under clothing without any special accommodations, perfect for working professionals or those managing a household.

The Design

The design of lymphedema compression garments is very specific, and these are not the same as compression garments used in sports injury recovery. Instead of applying a continual level of pressure along the garment they are designed with more pressure applied to the limb or body area at the bottom, with slightly less compression at the top.

With this design, the increased compression at the extremities and the decreased compression closer to the body core assist in moving the lymph along the natural pathways. It also assists in preventing edema in the limbs in sleeves, thigh highs, socks, and pantyhose and in the body with bras, vests and custom designed garments.

Fitting

It is critical to have any lymphedema compression garments professionally fitted by a Certified Lymphedema Therapist. These professionals are trained in the correct fitting of garments, including determining the correct compression class appropriate for the individual patient.

Failing to have lymphedema compression garments correctly fitted or not carefully selecting the recommended compression class can result in poor overall performance, increased risk of edema, and irritation. Irritation is often a result of garments that are too tight rubbing on the skin, creating lesions and causing problems with wearing the garments as recommended.

Estimated Lifetime

It can be difficult to estimate the lifetime of use expected from lymphedema compression garments. The amount of time you are required to wear the garment compared with your lifestyle and other factors will all influence how long it will retain its correct level of compression. Proper care and washing of the garment will also play a role in how long it is usable.

Most people will find that daily use lymphedema compression garments need to be replaced approximately every 3 to 6 months. With less frequent wear, this can easily increase to 6 to 10 months. Once the garments are only used for specific types of activities, a single compression garment may be all you need.
