Boilers tend to last the longest of all your HVAC system parts, they can last up to 15 years! You should always get annual service done to your boiler to help it last that long. If you are starting to think that maybe your boiler could use a tune up, or a full replacement, here are a few tips to help you:
- It’s more than 15 years old. Fairly obvious here, an old boiler will need to be replaced sooner than a brand-new boiler. If your boiler has lasted you 15 years, or more, it is highly recommended to have an expert come take a look at it.
- Check your ratings. The energy efficiency rating is very important. By having a higher rating on your boiler’s energy efficiency, you will be able to save hundreds of dollars on your energy bills. The newer the boiler, the higher the rating will be, saving you the most money.
- Your boiler is on its own schedule. Does your boiler take a while to heat up? Does it feel like the temperature of your house is controlled by your boiler, both literally and figuratively? This is an obvious sign that your boiler needs repairs or replacement.
- Colors matter. Does your boiler have a yellow flame? This is a definite sign that your boiler needs replacing. The flame within the boiler should be a blue color.
- Frequent repairs. Does it feel like your boiler constantly needs repairs? A new boiler can seem pricey, but overall it will save you money in the long run. It will save money on repairs, and on your electric bill.
- Maintenance. Is your boiler getting old? Is it getting harder to find the parts to maintain it? It’s probably time to get a new boiler.
- Temperature is off. If your house is not feeling as warm as it should, that is a sure sign that your boiler is going out. Check that the thermostat is where it should be, and if your house has been feeling cold anyway, call an expert to come check out your boiler today.
- Bills. Has your heating bill been skyrocketing? It may not be the company you use, it could be that your boiler is not performing as well as it used to. An older boiler can cause your bills to go up, without you even realizing that it is not performing at its peak.
