If you are planning to attend a technical school in NYC, it is best to think ahead. If you are in your last year of high school or are planning to retrain, make sure you put some time aside and exert effort. If you fail to do so, you can find yourself in a dead-end career or simply wasting your time in a course you do not like for a job or career you really have no interest in.

Planning ahead may seem irksome, but it will save you time. It can also save you money and frustration. To make things a little easier, consider the following tips.

Have a Plan

Make sure you have a plan on what you want to do. If necessary take aptitude tests. You can also talk to your guidance counselor or a knowledgeable guidance counselor. An employment agency can help. After this, you can go ahead and prepare a list of the potential candidates.

College Checklist

To help narrow the candidates, you need to put together a checklist of the characteristics you want, need and require of a technical school. The list should include at least the following:

1. Reputation – Does the technical school have a good reputation in your selected field of study?

2. Accreditation – Since nothing is worse than obtaining an associate degree or finishing your course work and finding no one accepts your degree, diploma or course work as valid, always make sure the school has accreditation. Also check who it is accredited with.

3. Training – Does the program offer practical training when it is applicable?

4. Facilities – Does the technical school have modern facilities? Are the classrooms of a size you can work and be comfortable in? What about number of campuses and whether one is close by?

5. Apprenticeships, Work Semesters or on-the-job training terms – these are all beneficial to helping you learn your trade and establish your credentials for future employers

6. Costs – how much will it cost to accomplish what you want? Are there any hidden fees? Is there any form of financial aid, bursaries, scholarships or similar programs?

7. Job placement – Does the school have a job placement program? Is it a successful one? What is their percentage rate compared to the other technical schools in NYC?

In addition to the above points, you also need to look at transportation. Will you require a parking pass or can you take public transportation? Another factor may be hours of study and means. Can you attend in person or are some courses available to take online.

Attending a technical school in NYC may prove to be the best step you have taken to making your way in the world. It may help you establish a successful career. If you decide to follow this route, be sure you get the facts about each school. Establish their legitimacy and their ability to fulfill your needs, before you decide to apply. This will go a long way to ensuring you and the school are a positive fit.
