There are three basic types of residential garage doors to choose from: a single panel door, a sectional door or a roll up door in Boston, MA. Each has its own unique advantages and disadvantages. Before you start shopping for a new garage door it is important to understand the difference between each type. Here is a quick guide to help you determine which type is best suited for your needs.

A single panel door is, as the name implies, made from a single monolithic panel. Many people prefer this type of door for its simple style. The biggest drawback to this type of door, however, is that it requires more space to open than the other types. The single panel will arc several feet outside of the garage opening. This can be dangerous for children or pets standing in the driveway. It can also be inconvenient to stop several feet in front of the garage door to prevent the vehicle getting hit as the door opens.

Probably the most common type of garage door in Boston is the sectional door. It is often referred to as an up-and-over door because of how it operates—sliding up and overhead. A sectional door is constructed of six or eight panels. Each panel has its own connection to the track which increases the reliability of the door. This type of door is popular because it does not require any additional space outside of the garage to open; you can drive right up to the door without any problem. Another advantage of the sectional door is that it can be made from a variety of materials including steel, wood or a composite.

A roll up door in Boston, MA, on the other hand, is typically made from corrugated steel. Other materials such as fiberglass can also be used although they typically aren’t as durable or resistant to impacts. A roll up door operates in much the same way as a roller shade on your window. A preloaded spring inside a rolling mechanism makes it quick and easy to manually open a garage door. One potential drawback to installing a roll up door in Boston, MA is that this type of door cannot be insulated as well as other types of doors. That being said, it is a cost effective solution for storage sheds and other types of outbuildings where energy efficiency isn’t as important as on a garage.
