They will then cut the strip into many pieces, with each piece containing one to four hairs. The doctor will then transplant the pieces or “follicular units” into the treatment area. The patient will be given a local anesthetic and an oral sedative to keep them comfortable and relaxed.
What Is FUE?
FUE stands for “Follicular Unit Extraction,” and it is a minimally-invasive procedure that also involves transplanting hair follicles from one part of the head to another. Instead of removing an entire strip of skin, the doctor will use an instrument called a “punch” that works like a tiny cookie cutter and removes hair grafts one at a time. The surgeon will then transplant the hairs to the treatment site. A local anesthetic and oral sedative will keep the patient comfortable during the procedure.
Are There Other Types of Transplant Surgery?
The doctor can perform hair transplant surgery with facial hair, eyebrows, and even eyelashes. In all three cases, the doctor will use hair taken from the back of the patient’s head and cut it into the right size and shape. They can use either FUT or FUE for eyebrows and facial hair, but they can use only FUT for eyelashes.
