A BSN or bachelor’s degree in nursing is the result of graduating from a nursing college in Cincinnati. This course of studies is designed to further the educational attainment of those who are RNs. To enter these programs the candidate normally will have to meet certain admission criteria which usually include preparatory degrees and a current valid nurse’s license. The specific requirements depend a great deal on the location of the college but there are basic necessities that are necessary in order to successfully graduate with a BSN from an accredited college that offers the program.
A BSN program is four years and before an applicant is accepted they are expected to have completed some prior formal education. This may include holding an associate’s degree in nursing or having completed a qualified course of studies. Some nursing colleges will take an applicant if they have successfully completed an approved nursing diploma program. Rarely will an applicant be successful in gaining admission without some type of educational credentials.
As well as having credentials the applicant must hold a current valid nursing license. In most places this will be a license issued to a registered nurse rather than a licensed practical nurse. For a LPN to get his or her bachelor’s degree in nursing they will first have to take LPN-RN courses. The license should be one which is issued where the nurse is based and must be unrestricted. This is not only true for those enrolled in traditional on campus studies but those involved in distance learning as well.
Once the applicant has been accepted into the college they may be expected to maintain a minimum GPA to maintain their enrollment. The courses that the student will take are general education as well as coursework which are unique to nursing. If a student fails to maintain the minimum grade point average they may be placed on academic probation and if the grades don’t improve then the next step is dismissal from the program.
When a registered nurse pursues his or her BSN degree this will give them the formal recognition that they will need to broaden their scope of practice; once they acquired the degree they will find they have wider range of employment opportunities in the healthcare field. Not only are there more opportunities, a nurse who holds a BSN can also look forward to a higher salary.
