With the 2017 model year came the new Ford 3.5L EcoBoost engine. This is the next generation of Ford’s 375 hp, 470 lb-ft of torque EcoBoost V6. Don’t be confused, though, this is not a minor update. No, this engine is a beast all its own. Here are a few things you need to know about this new monster engine for the next time you go to a Ford dealer in Barrington.

It is a Full Redesign

While this can be considered the second iteration of this engine, everything is different other than the bore and stroke. Keeping the same bore and stroke allows the engine to retain the same displacement, but everything else, even the block, has been replaced this year.

It Makes Way More Power

While the first iteration of Ford’s 3.5L EcoBoost had some impressive numbers with 375 horsepower at 5000 RPM and 470 lb-ft of torque at 3500 RPM, but it simply doesn’t compare to this year’s model which pack an impressive 450 horsepower at 5000 RPM and 510 lb-ft of torque at 3500 RPM. That’s an increase of 75 horsepower and 40 lb-ft of torque. This makes for a very impressive boost over last year’s model.

It’s Connected Exclusively to a 10-Speed

The new 2017 3.5L EcoBoost comes exclusively mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission that was co-developed by both Ford and GM. Because of this partnership to develop the transmission, both Ford and GM vehicles that contain the new 10-speed will have identical transmission internals. This does not mean, however, that the transmissions are the same. The bellhousing, input, and output shafts will be different.

Ford has completely redesigned one of its most popular engines of the last several years to make it better than ever with the 2017 model year. Currently, the engine is only available in Ford trucks, but may be offered in additional vehicles down the road.
