Stainless steel tubing is usually used for materials with a high versatility, corrosion resistance and a relatively low maintenance cost. Since pipes and tubes are used for different functions, varying specifications and standards are utilized to ensure they are manufactured in different grades. There are two major types of tubes and piping which include the welded and seamless pipes.
In welded stainless steel piping, the alloy is first melted according to certain specifications, depending on the application and grade. Tubes made out of welded stainless can be formed from either a hot or cold formed coil. Tubing made from a cold-formed stainless steel has strong mechanical traits, a smooth finish as well as good tolerance to harsh conditions than those formed from a hot formed coil.
Regardless of whether the tubing is made from a hot or cold rolled coil, the welding process is the same. First, the tubing fabricator technician will separate the coils into designated widths. Although the process is expensive, it produces high quality pipes.
Piercing uses a stainless metal alloy as its base material, and then pierces a hole in the bar. The bar is then rolled and heated to assume a tubular form. In extrusion, a stainless steel metal bar is fed into a tube and worked through a die. Extrusion is mostly used because it does discriminate against the metal content and can produce tubes efficiently and effectively.
