Mental health challenges are affecting people at a high rate. If mental health challenges can be identified early on, steps can be taken to help the person get better. Unfortunately, many mental health challenges or substance use disorders are not identified until after the sufferer has caused severe harm to themselves or others. Adult mental health courses train people to recognize the signs and symptoms of substance use disorder and mental health challenges early on.
Adult mental health first aid training is an eight-hour course that gives participants the essential tools to help someone going through a mental health crisis. In the same way that CPR can save a person who is unable to breathe or has a heart attack, MHFA can also save a person’s life.
Hundreds of thousands of people throughout the United States, including many in Minneapolis, have been trained and have received certification in MHFA. Although most people interested in MHFA are involved in a healthcare or first response profession, the training being offered can help anyone.
In the same way that everyone, not just doctors or nurses, can be called upon to give CPR when an emergency arises, anyone may be called upon to offer adult mental health first aid to a friend, family member, colleague, or another member of the community who needs help.
During MHFA courses, you will learn about mental illness risk factors and symptoms. Unique information is given on trauma, anxiety, psychosis, substance use disorder, and suicide. You will be trained on how to act if someone is showing signs of mental illness and will learn more about professional self-help resources.
