An anodeless riser is a transition fitting for natural gas that makes it possible for plastic service lines to be brought above ground in compliance with specific regulations. These regulations state that plastic services have to be installed below ground level. However, the exception is that it does not have to extend to above ground, outside of buildings.

Steps must be taken to ensure that the plastic pipe is adequately protected against damage and deterioration. In addition, it cannot be used in supporting external loads.

Installation of an Anodeless Riser

It is possible to purchase an anodeless riser readily from a wide variety of manufacturers. It can be completely fabricated, or the installer may fabricate the riser in the field. This is the case when it comes to service head adapter risers

Generally, the external protective casing is schedule 40 steel pipe that is already bent, coated with epoxy. The plastic gas pipe that is inside of the casing has to extend to a point above the ground in order for it to be an anodeless riser.

Otherwise, the riser casing will be a steel pipe gas carrier that is buried underground. Usually, a label will be present so the installer will know the bury depth. Typically, the outlet comes with tapered pipe threads. However, with industrial or commercial risers, a bolted flange attaches to the meter valve.

The piping inlet, or the pigtail, is ready to be connected to the service line. The service connection is made either by heat fusion or mechanical coupling that is attached to the pigtail.

The Benefit of an Anodeless Riser

The greatest benefit of an anodeless riser is that it does not need cathodic protection. The reason for this is because the outside steel casing is not the gas carrier. Instead, the plastic that is inside of the steel casing is actually the gas carrier.
